Heavy Pull Crossbows

Much like composite bows, crossbows of all types can be built with reinforced mechanisms and a heavier draw on the string to deal additional damage in combat. All heavy draw crossbows are made with a particular strength rating. If your Strength bonus is less than the strength rating of the crossbow, you can’t effectively cock the string, so it takes longer to reload. A heavy draw crossbow can be made with a high strength rating to deal additional damage; this adds the crossbow’s strength bonus to damage on every shot.

A heavy draw hand crossbow is limited to a maximum strength bonus of +1, which adds an additional 100 gp to its cost. If your Strength bonus is less than the strength rating, it takes a standard action to reload the bow.

A heavy draw light crossbow is limited to a maximum strength bonus of +3. Each point of Strength bonus granted by the bow adds 70 gp to its cost. If your Strength bonus is less than the strength rating, it takes a standard action to reload the bow.

A heavy draw heavy crossbow is limited to a maximum strength bonus of +5. Each point of Strength bonus granted by the bow adds 100 gp to its cost. If your Strength bonus is less than the strength rating, it takes two standard actions to reload the bow.

Heavy draw repeating and heavy repeating crossbows are limited to maximum strength bonuses as regular light and heavy crossbows, with identical costs. If your Strength bonus is less than the strength rating, pulling the reloading lever is a move action, but the time necessary to load a new case of bolts is unaffected.
